The British moved the Kershaw family into the jail cell where the sliders with the smallpox were. But of course Ms. Kershaw protested. The only way Joseph and his family could get out is if it caught on fire,so Joseph, while everyone was sleeping, took the candle and went outside to talk to the moon. Then he came in the cell and esteda little. That early morn’ while everyone was still asleep, Joseph lay a blanket on the front of the cell with all the little children on it, set a blanket on fire with the candle then Ms.Kershaw woke up and asked why he did it so he explained. But, then a soldiercame over and blamed Ms.Kershaw. But he told the soldier it was him and he got sent to the keeping room to stay there for acouple of days and then they shall make him a slave. While his family goes to Burndale.

Joseph is in the keeping room because he set the cabin on fire. His family got sent to Burndale because there was no place else for them to go to. But later on Mary sneeks in and takes some of Joseph’s books. Then a very big line was when he said”Father is not always right about girl education.” Then he thinks to himself am I betraying my father?
